Demo: He isn't new to the scene but has some fresh ideas also inspired by contemporary art and design.

We’re off to a good start in this new year, having been awarded two prizes by the Sociedad Mexicana de Interioristas A.C. (SMI) at the IV International SMI Architecture, Interior, Design and Landscape Biennial Conference, Guadalajara 2008.
The first one is the SMI Professional 2009 Gold Medal for Excellence in Design, in honor of an 8 year career in Architecture and Interiorism.
The second one is an Honorable Mention granted to the USG Shelter 08 during the same Biennial Conference. We would like to thank Mr. Juan Bernardo Dolores, National President of the SMI (Middle) and Arch. As usual, here is what they had to say about us, in SuJin Kim's words:

To the eyes of outsiders, architecture in Mexico is often recognized as a regionalistic architecture embracing intense sunlight, dry wind and soil. Prestigious architects like Luis Barragan and Ricardo Legorreta were essential part of contemporary Mexican architecture, while now emerging architects who are equipped with global mindset are creating new architecture in mexico.
Gerardo Broissin is a young Mexican architect whi is actively engaged in architecture and interior in Mexico City. He was chosen as one of the 10 most emerging architects in the world at Design Vanguard 2007 by Architectural Record. Sometimes young architects who are full of passion pay little attention to basic values of architecture as they are preoccupied with experiments. By contrast, BROISSINarchitects’ work on construction projects with the focus on three main factors – the client, quality and idea – from beginning to end. This architectural philosophy dedicated to the basics is the fundamental strength of BROISSINarchitects.
He believes that architecture should reflect the social, economic, cultural environments as well as the surrounding context in an active manner. Based on this, efforts to seek new solutions in every project are born into his unique architectural works with different features.
In “Taanah Sak House”, light as the most basic factor for living space was paid attention to in designing. In the northern end of the building, the glass structure was built instead of covering with a roof so that light can be flowed inside. The steel frame that buttresses the glass structure also plays the role of decoration. “Vladimir Kaspe Cultural Center” is reminiscent of the architectural language in modern architecture. The exterior of the building was finished in white, the first floor floated with a piloti and the rooftop can be used for holding events and main spaces are connected with lamps. The external wall on the 2nd floor, which is a major space, was finished with translucent glass offering an aesthetic atmosphere.
“Showroom FUA”, where blinders are displayed presents a sophisticated feel as the wall, floor and ceiling are linked smoothly with transformed boxes. This showroom was produced manually by skilled local carpenters. With vibrant colors, Broissin’s architecture shows vitality that is a unique characteristic of Mexican architecture. Red and white were selected for the external wall of “SACM Auditorium”, which respectively symbolize Mexico’s traditional music and contemporary music.
“Film Academy” highlights the shape of the building through bold use of black for the external wall and yellow for the internal wall with dynamic black mass penetrating a transparent glass box in a zigzag pattern. The movie theater is a dark space without windows, which has a layered spatial form from seat arrangements. The transparent mass is a space for visitors.
In “Adame House”, he designed the building based on the relationship between programs and circulations. Programs for living space were laid out first and then circulations were connected, creating a mass in twisted shape. As such, distinctive shapes in Broissin’s architecture are the results of reasonable spatial arrangement by function.
Under the concept of virus, “Urban Shelter” was planned to propose futuristic residence. Each unit, a symbol of a virus agent, can be attached to the existing building in an economic and expeditious manner.
BROISSINarchitects is expanding the spectrum of his work with a wide range of architectural ideas from consideration on basic factors to experiment on creative ideas.

SHELTER No. 1 USG08

This is an economic, prefab, modular housing Project for 2 or 3 persons of any socio-economic level that is expansible by means of the addition of modules and is also ecologically friendly.
It is a real house, built as an exhibition thanks to USG Mexico. It is an essay on the study of housing and could become another option for developing low cost housing with very short building times but, beyond any speculation about its future, for now, it has turned into a polemic, already realized project, a detonator of ideas in collective and individual thought for those who have been able to walk, live and feel it for no more than 10 minutes, and in that of the select few who have spent a night in it.
The unit is developed in three levels; the lower floor, with the access and hydroponia areas; the middle level with the public area: kitchen, reading, living and bath rooms; and on the second level, the private area with two open bedrooms, study and closet.

Es una vivienda para 2 o 3 personas de cualquier nivel socio-económico, prefabricada, económica, modular, expansible al acoplar mas módulos y ecológicamente amigable.

Es una vivienda real, construida a manera de exhibición gracias a USG México, es un ensayo del estudio sobre la vivienda, podría convertirse en una opción más para desarrollar vivienda a bajo costo con tiempos de construcción muy cortos, pero más allá de especulaciones sobre su futuro por lo pronto se ha convertido en una vivienda construida, polémica y detonadora de ideas en el pensamiento colectivo e individual de quienes han podido caminarla, sentirla y vivirla por 10 minutos y en el de tres o cuatro que han dormido en ella por una noche.

La unidad se desarrolla en tres niveles, en planta baja el acceso y área para hidroponía, en el primer nivel se desarrolla el área pública con cocina, área de lectura, sala de estar y baño completo, en el 2do nivel esta el área privada con dos dormitorios abiertos, estudio y clóset.

This time we had the opportunity to have some of our projects published by Beijing's Vision and Hong Kong's Hinge Magazines. Read on to find out what Hinge thinks about us.

The range of work completed by this young Mexico firm...is wide, both programmatically and stylistically. Gerardo Broissin...has quickly become one of the young talents to watch (Architectural Record last year included him in a list of the ten most promising architects in the world). A collection of crisp, carefully crafted small buildings has revealed his particular take on detailing, materials and formal language, even as they each explore diverse approaches to site, programme and abstraction. The firm undertakes both architectural and interior projects. Broissin previously caught hinge's eye with a theoretical project for towers of podlike shelters, but the firm's lovely built houses and small buildings proved it knew how to command the architectural process. Perhaps it rests upon Broissin's stated philosophy of beginning and ending with three things: the client, built quality and the idea. If that sounds general enough to encompass most of the architectural process, his admonition for constant reflection guides it...something we dont always make adequate allowance for along the way.

The team headed by Iñaki Echeverria, landscape planner who operated as the executive director of the project, in collaboration with more than 80 specialists from public and private institutions such as UNAM (through various institutes and research groups), Maryland University and BROISSINarchitects as directors of the architectural project, developed a deep study to transform an ecological park in the tract of land that was formerly occupied by Pemex’s Azcapotzalco Refinery.

El Equipo liderado por Iñaki Echeverría, urbanista paisajista que opero como director ejecutivo del proyecto en colaboraron con mas de 80 especialistas de instituciones publicas y privadas como la UNAM (a través de diversos institutos y grupos de investigación), la Univ. De Maryland, y BROISSINarchitects como directores de proyecto arquitectónico, desarrolló un estudio a fondo para transformar en un parque ecológico el predio que antiguamente ocupaba la refinería de PEMEX en Azcapotzalco.

Fragmento de la tésis para el Parque “ECOLOGÍA CULTURAL”:

“En los últimos diez años se ha desarrollado de forma casi imperceptible una nueva disciplina llamada Urbanismo de Paisaje (LANDSCAPE URBANISM) como respuesta a la complejidad de los retos que presenta el fenómeno ciudad en el siglo XXI. El nombre de esta nueva disciplina, que conjuga dos términos tradicionalmente excluyentes, busca generar alternativas de paradigmas para la aproximación a problemas de territorio a través de mecanismos de trabajo creativos. Su base, la Síntesis Dialéctica, o Método Dialógico se propone como alternativa para el análisis, estudio y creación en los más diversos ámbitos:

una opción que abre nuevas perspectivas para el desempeño de equipos de trabajo plurales ante retos tan complejos como el diseño de un parque para el siglo XXI.

El Parque Bicentenario será el lugar donde “desarrollo sustentable” se transforme en realidad tangible, donde el manejo de desechos permita reducir el impacto humano sobre el planeta, dentro de un entorno de alta calidad arquitectónica y paisajística, para crear un nuevo paradigma: una ECOLOGIA CULTURAL.

El Parque Bicentenario se concibe, en primer término, desde una postura técnica y pragmática, absolutamente enfocada al funcionamiento de los Servicios Ecosistemicos, a la viabilidad Hídrica, a los Procesos y Tecnologías de Remediacion Ambiental existentes y a la creación de un Sistema Integral de Manejo de Efluentes y Residuos Sólidos; desde ahí evoluciona a un diseño arquitectonico y de paisaje contundentes, plenamente identificables y de caracter simbólico. Este objetivo se resuelve en distintas estrategias.

La propuesta basa su solidez en en un blindaje ambiental mas allá de la remediación que ya existe en el predio, reforzado por una paleta biológica específicamente adaptada al valle de México, un cálculo hídrico que garantiza la sustentabilidad del sistema lacustre y en el objetivo general de constituir un entorno autosuficiente, de nulo impacto al medio.

La historia del sitio se asume desde una lectura crítica, que no busca esconder bajo un manto verde de olvido el pasado idílico original del valle, ni el pasado productivo reciente, ni el presente proceso de remediación. La sociedad no debe olvidar los logros sociales y económicos del modelo industrial que se ubicó en el sitio pero tampoco el costo ecológico que debemos pagar hoy por ellos.

Es la única forma de inventar un futuro capaz de afrontar los retos humanos aminorando el impacto en el planeta.

Se propone retornar a un ambiente lacustre característico del valle de México (y de la ubicación geográfica del terreno en particular) no como un ejercicio de nostalgia, sino como un mecanismo para reincorporar la ecología endémica al valle. Este es el mecanismo mas adecuado para garantizar la viabilidad y sustentabilidad del proyecto.

La estrategia arquitectónica y de paisaje consiste en crear DOS LAGOS interconectados, uno por cada 100 años de historia Independiente y Moderna de México, que articulan el variado programa arquitectónico (Auditorio, Polideportivo, Vivero, Jardín Botánico, Orquideario, Zonas Recreativas, Museo de Sitio, Restaurantes, Humedales…) Esta diversidad en el programa, que se asume como representativo de la riqueza biológica, cultural y social de México, se relaciona con el espíritu de los nuevos tiempos, en donde lo político se transparenta, se vuelve accesible al ciudadano y es capaz de coexistir en balance con el medio.

Todo el parque se concibe como UN MUSEO AMBIENTAL VIVO, las visitas a su infraestructura se convierten en parte del atractivo y su operación diaria será el mejor modelo educativo para la difusión de una cultura de la SUSTENTABILIDAD.

La estrategia arquitectónica es contundente en cuanto al diseño de las nuevas estructuras y paisaje, pero consigue conservar e incorporar la estructuras construidas existentes (edificios, bodegas, calles, plataformas, entre otros) como elementos del nuevo diseño y como memoria histórica de la presencia de PEMEX, empresa clave en la construcción del México Moderno que celebra el bicentenario de su Independencia y el centenario de su Revolución. “

Our most recent published material is Architectural Lighting'spiece on Demisi Boks' Headquarters, by Jennifer Lash.

A contemporary office whose biggest challenge was the given amount of space within which the designers had to work: 1667 square feet in which to fit 40 people comfortably.

The lighting scheme was used to make the space appear larger than it actually is, installing fluorescent fixtures in coves around the ceiling and also along the floor to give the sensation of light boxes floating in space.

Crystallized Installations with Open Endings

The creative and exhilarating triangle unit in this construction makes it appear endles and open to infinity. The triangles have different shapes, formations and arrangements, which create the interior and exterior exhibition area.
Together they compose the concept that repeats itself in all the details of the museum inside out.
It actually creates a kind of "confusing" aura that is stimulated by the amplitude of the endless lines, which continue throughout the walls, the ceilings and reflect on the ground making the natural light openings appear random and captivating at the same time...

Dalcasa, Croatia. Modernism in Tropic of Cancer (Taanah Sak House)

Un ejercicio de reflexión plasmado en una torre que busca no serlo, aunque irremediablemente la altura la delata. Es un rascacielos en evolución continua y sin límite para su altura; su propuesta es un sistema de módulos; de programas, una matriz que crece en sintonía con el usuario y sus necesidades, formando una unidad mutante. Tan alta como módulos se añadan, tan compleja como módulos se desfasen o retiren, un edificio que se suma, multiplica o resta sin modificar su identidad arquitectónica y sin alterar su estructura, ya que su estructura es el mismo módulo octagonal en sí mismo. Un proyecto utópico propuesto por el arquitecto Gerardo Broissin, egresado con Honores de la Universidad Anahuac. Posteriormente estudió en SCI-ARCH California, EUA.

En 2007 BROISSINarchitects fue designado por la revista Architectural Record como uno de los 10 despachos más prometedores del mundo. En su expresión arquitectónica refleja la intensa reflexión sobre los diferentes temas que lo rodean: la estética, la funcionalidad, la moda y el propósito real de cada proyecto. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en México, EUA, Japón, Egipto, Canadá, Colombia, España, Alemania y Argentina.

The project, sent by the studio to Poland, was exhibited at Gdanks along with 26 professional and 11 student participants.
The sole investor in the project was Invest Komfort S.A. (PLC), a real estate developer, well-established in the market of the Gdańsk region and beyond.

El proyecto, enviado por el taller a Polonia, fue exhibido en la ciudad de Gdansk junto con otros 26 participantes de la formula para profesionales y 11 de la formula para estudiantes.
El unico inversionista del proyecto fue Invest Komfort S.A. (PLC), un desarrollador inmobiliario bien establecido en la region de Gdańsk y alrededores.

The Entremuros supplement to Reforma Newspaper dedicated an article to the award received by the studio last December, Karina Gonzalez whas in charge of the article, she visited the studio this February and these were the results :

El suplemento del Periodico Reforma Entremuros, dedicó un reportaje al reconocimiento recibido por el taller el diciembre pasado, Karina González estuvo a cargo del artículo, visitó la oficina a principios de Febrero y estos fueron los resultados:

Figurar entre los diez mejores arquitectos del mundo es un título difícil de alcanzar, sin embargo los mexicanos Tatiana Bilbao y Gerardo Broissin obtuvieron este importante nombramiento que marca un parteaguas en su carrera profesional.

Recientemente la revista estadounidense Architectural Record nombró a estos jovenes como ganadores del "Design Vanguard 2007". Presea que reconoce anualmente a los arquitectos más sobresalientes a nivel mundial.

Ademas de Bilbao y Broissin, en la lista tambien figuran los arquitectos que encabezan los despachos Höweler+Yoon, Leven Betts Studio, Sebastián Mariscal Studio, Moongyu Choi+GaA, Studio Pei-Zhu, Sou Fujimoto, Atelier Kempe Thill y estudio.entresitio.

Ambos Artífices señalan la importancia de haber recibido esta designación que enriquece su carrera profesional y pone en alto el nombre de la arquitectura mexicana.

TALENTO QUE TRASCIENDE

Desde pequeña, Tatiana Bilbao descubrió su pasion por la arquitectura, pero nunca imaginó que al elegir esta profesión iba a recoger numerosos éxitos. Quizá por ello se sorprendió al conocer la noticia de que habia sido nombrada entre las mejores arquitectas del mundo.

"Cuando me invitaron a participar pensé que mi despacho (Tatiana Bilbao/mx.a) aún no tenia el nivel suficiente para ser seleccionado. No obstante, mandé un portafolio con diferentes obras y resultó nominado.

"Ser elegida entre muchos arquitectos representa un reconocimiento al esfuerzo que hacemos los talleres jóvenes por construir obras diferentes. Esta oportunidad nos abre las puertas para dar a conocer nuestro trabajo en Estados Unidos y en el resto del mundo", afirma.

Algunas obras de esta artífice que llamaron la atención del jurado, son una planta de líquidos con diseño sustentable que se ubicará en Guadalajara, Jalisco y un jardín botánico que estará en la region de Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Actualmente esta arquitecta, egresada de la Universidad Iberoamericana, trabaja en diferentes proyectos entre los que destacan el Pabellón de México.

para la Expo Zaragoza en Españañ una casa en Mongolia, China, una funeraria en la ciudad de San Luis Potosí y una escuela en la capital de Sinaloa.

Tatiana deice sentirse orgullosa de ser mecivana y asegura que es un buen momento para hacer arquitectura en la Ciudad, oues hay un notable crecimiento en la rama de la construcción.

"Admiro a muchos arquitectos mexicanos, sobre todo a Mario Pani, quien generó importantes puntos de referencia como Tlalnepantla, Ciudad Universitaria y la Unidad Miguel Alemán", agrega.
INCENTIVO PROFESIONAL

En la rama de la arquitectura no esxiste una edad específica para alcanzar la cima profesional. Con tan sólo 32 años, Gerardo Broissin ha propuesto emblemáticas obras alrededor del mundo.

Al igual que Tatiana Bilbao, Gerardo mandó su portafolio a Estados Unidos y esperó la respuesta de los editores.

Posteriormente, recibió la revista y descubrió que además de haber obtenido el distintivo de los diez mejores arquitectos del mundo, uno de sus proyectos llamado "Urban Shelter" (un prototipo de cápsulas habitacionales para la ciudad de Vancouver, Canadá), apareció en la portada.

"Estar en esta lista a nivel internacional no es sencillo, pues somos muchos en el gremio. Creo que si me eligieron no es por que sea mejor que los demás, sino por que llegué en el momento indicado con el cúmulo de experiencias necesarias para lograrlo.

Este reconocimiento le siembra mucha energía al taller (Broissin Architects) y representa un importante estímulo en mi carrera, principalmente por la difusión mundial que reciben mis propuestas", dice el egresado de la Universidad Anáhuac México Norte.
Actualmente, Gerardo trabaja en el proyecto de un auditorio para la Sociedadd de Autores y Compositores de Mexico y en el diseño de una torre habitacional que participará en un concurso para ser construida en Dubai, Arabia Saudita.

"En México, la condición de hacer una obra no depende de la experiencia que tenga un arquitecto, sino del esfuerzo y las ganas que depositen en hacer un proyecto.

El hecho de que dos mexicanos estemos en la lista de los mejores arquitectos, habla de un buen presagio para la arquitectura del País", finaliza.
